How successful is the İnönü University Liver Transplant Institute?
Having started liver transplantation from deceased donors in 2002 and from living donors in 2005, the İnönü University Faculty of Medicine Turgut Özal Medical Center had performed a total of 3,550 liver transplants as of 1 September 2023, 506 from deceased donors and 3,044 from living donors. The Liver Transplant Institute, founded in 2011, successfully transplanted five patients simultaneously in 2019, followed by six-way and seven-way cross liver transplants. In the seven-way cross liver transplant performed in April 2024, 7 patients and 7 donors were operated on simultaneously, an unprecedented operation worldwide. The Institute also has the largest liver transplant capacity in Europe and the second largest in the world.
What is a cross liver transplant?
A donor who is medically incompatible with their own patient may be compatible with another patient. Likewise, when a patient is incompatible with their own donor, they may be compatible with another patient’s donor. By entering the donor pool and exchanging donors, such patients get the chance to find a suitable donor. The method in which donors of two or more patients are swapped so that each receives a suitable transplant is called a cross liver transplant. A patient who is compatible with their own donor can also receive a transplant from a more suitable donor through cross transplantation.
What are the advantages of cross transplantation?
With the cross transplant method, patients who are medically incompatible with their donors can receive a compatible transplant, and patients who are compatible with their donors can receive a transplant from a more suitable donor.
Who can apply to the cross liver transplant system?
Patients who are medically incompatible with their donor, and patients who are compatible but prefer a transplant from a more suitable donor, can benefit from the cross transplant system. The following can apply: donors aged between 18 and 40; donors who are medically incompatible with the patient; healthy (fit) donors.
I have a compatible donor. Is it still worthwhile to apply to the cross liver transplant system?
In some cases, even if a patient is medically compatible with their own donor, the cross transplant system allows them to receive a transplant from a more medically suitable donor. This method can increase the chance of success of the transplant and help achieve better results. At our Institute, every patient can be quickly matched with a donor who is medically more suitable than their own and benefit from the cross transplant opportunity.
